Dubai Elevates Health and Safety Standards in Schools and Public Areas

Dubai is enhancing its health and safety protocols across schools and public spaces, reflecting a commitment to public well-being. Recent initiatives include rigorous inspections of school health clinics by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and stricter enforcement of food safety standards. These measures aim to ensure a secure environment for residents and students alike.

Enhanced School Health and Safety

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA), in collaboration with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), has commenced inspections of private school clinics. These visits, which began at the start of the new academic year 2023/2024, are designed to evaluate the clinics’ readiness and adherence to DHA regulations.

  • Key Focus Areas:
    • Emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
    • Availability and maintenance of essential medical equipment, including defibrillators, blood pressure monitors, and oxygen cylinders.
    • Adequacy of first-aid supplies.
    • Ratio of medical staff to student population.
    • Overall safety of the clinic environment.

Faris Al Mazmi, director of the Clinical Audit and Control Department at DHA’s Health Regulation Sector, emphasized that these comprehensive regulations are in place to safeguard student health. The inspections aim to ensure medical preparedness for emergencies and the delivery of high-quality medical services within schools.

Strengthening Food Safety Standards

In parallel, efforts are being made to bolster food safety across the emirate. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has been actively monitoring food establishments, leading to the closure of businesses found to be in violation of safety regulations. One such instance involved M S Food Trading LLC, which was shut down for repeated offenses and failure to implement corrective measures, posing a risk to public health.

ADAFSA reported a significant number of food safety violations, with 1,229 reports received in the first half of the current year. This increase is attributed to greater community awareness and participation in reporting non-compliance. The authority encourages the public to report any concerns regarding food safety through the Abu Dhabi Government’s toll-free hotline.

Broader Public Health Measures

These initiatives are part of a wider commitment to public health and safety. While not directly related to the new regulations, past measures such as the implementation of self-declaration forms for passengers traveling to India during the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the proactive approach taken to manage health risks. Similarly, the denial of a child’s death due to meningitis at a Dubai school, confirmed by health authorities, underscores the importance of accurate information dissemination and the role of schools in maintaining health vigilance.
